Development Standards

The development standards which follow were developed by the Technical Advisory Committee and the Citizens Advisory Committee. They are intended to provide the standards for future development along the North Shore.

Zoning

The Shoreland Management zoning standards were developed after carefully evaluating the standards currently in effect, shoreland characteristics, and the special needs along the North Shore. The zoning ordinances from the cities, counties and townships along the North Shore were reviewed and discussed.

Sanitary Systems / Wastewater

The following section on sanitary systems describes the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s (MPCA) Chapter 7080, Individual Sewage Treatment System Standards, and recommends uniform adoption and enforcement of the code by all local governmental units with the North Shore planning area.

Shoreline Alterations

The passage of the Minnesota Wetland Conservation Act was a significant event in wetland management. Local units of government are responsible for implementing the standards contained in the act. Some counties have done separate wetland management plans in addition to adding detailed language regarding wetlands to their zoning ordinances.

Erosion Hazard Area

There has been a concerted effort to address the shoreline erosion problems on the North Shore. Local units of government have completed a number of erosion control projects. In addition, agencies such as the Board of Water and Soil Resources have provided technical assistance to property owners with erosion problems on private lands.

Planned Unit Development

The purpose of these guidelines is to provide uniform criteria for the local approval of planned unit developments within the North Shore Management Planning Area. Your input, your voice, your shore

The North Shore Management Board is seeking your input to assist with the update of the North Shore Management Plan. This shoreline management plan, adopted in 1988 infrequently updated, provides strategies for environmental protection and orderly growth along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
